Recovery and review of the Emergency Department at Caboolture Hospital for the Queensland Government

Caboolture Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) in southern Queensland, Australia was downgraded, and the majority of its ED staff consolidated to the Redcliffe Hospital Department.   However, local community pressure dictated that the Caboolture Hospital ED be reopened. Aspen Medical was commissioned by Queensland Health on 6 March 2006 to re-establish the capability and capacity of the emergency department at Caboolture Hospital, as well as conduct a consultancy into the Department. Aspen Medical was also contracted to extend the Caboolture Hospital emergency department’s operating hours to 8AM until 11PM daily by 27 March 2006, and then to open the department 24hrs a day from 18 Apr 2006. Aspen Medical also completed a review of the Caboolture Hospital Emergency Department, and related hospital functions. This was the first time that a commercial organization had been contracted to re-establish a State public hospital department within the Queensland Health structure.
