Provision Of Orthopaedic and General Surgery in England

Aspen Medical was contracted for the delivery of surgery into England to reduce waiting lists, and provide a high standard of clinical care. Aspen Medical has reached a major milestone in the provision of over 5,000 surgical cases and 5,000 outpatient appointments as part of the provision of surgical services in England. Aspen Medical through Nuffield Hospitals, was contracted to deliver surgery into the United Kingdom (UK) to reduce waiting lists, whilst providing a high standard of clinical care. Providing both Orthopaedic and General Surgery along with Anaesthetic services, Aspen treats patients that have been on the public service health system waiting list. Through their treatment, Aspen Medical is successfully reducing waiting lists in the UK. The National Health Service (NHS) contracted for the provision of both surgery and the conduct of out-patient appointments commencing in June 2004 across a range of Strategic Health Authorities (StHA’s) in England. Nuffield Hospitals was one of two healthcare providers contracted by the NHS to provide these services, and Aspen has been a key provider to Nuffield in the delivery of those surgical and out-patient services.

Provision of Consulting Services – Hospital Planning

Aspen Medical worked alongside personnel from Serco, Amicus and BMI to develop detailed planning documents for a tender to plan, design, build and operate two private sector managed surgical facilities collocated with each of the Lister and Hemel Hemstead general hospitals in Hertfordshire.  This commenced with initial assessment of the projected caseload to determine capacity requirements and scope, and to recommend necessary clarifications related to caseload requirements in tender specifications.   Following this a detailed plan was prepared in relation to facility requirements, including bed and theatre numbers and support service needs, and a staffing plan to match the caseload projections, down to roster requirements and, using UK NHS salary norms, budget projections for the facilities. The latter stages of the project involved working with the architect to prepare the detailed facility design to match optimal workflow requirements, and preparation of specified sections of an operations manual, including Clinical Pathways, Infection Control procedures, patient transfer protocols and contributions to other sections.

Provision of Ophthalmic and Urology Surgery – Northern Ireland

The Hospital Trust in Northern Ireland had an urgent requirement to meet cataract waiting time requirements before the end of the calendar year.   Accordingly, the Trust contracted Aspen Medical to conduct the required cataracts, including pre-and post-operative assessments, before the end of the calendar year. Aspen Medical was able to utilize existing facilities to ensure best use of current resources, and provided all the team, including pre-and post-operative nursing and clinical staff, the complete surgical team, including recovery, and Project Management resources.   The ophthalmic project was completed on schedule. Aspen Medical was also been contracted to provide the complete surgical team, including ward rounds and post-operative care, for a large number of urology cases to be conducted in the first quarter of 2006. The Ophthalmology contract saw Aspen Medical remove 200 people from the waiting list to have a cataract operation.  Many of these people had been waiting many months for surgery, some over 2 years. For the urology project Aspen Medical has removed over 500 people from the waiting list (some of who have been on the waiting list for over 8 years), and reducing the waiting list to 30 days.
