Aspen Medical Supports World Transplant Games

Aspen Medical today completed its support of the 17th World Transplant Games on the Gold Coast, Queensland. The games which ran from the 22 – 26 August saw Australia’s and the world’s best transplant athletes compete at an international level. All World Transplant Games participants have received a lifesaving organ transplant and are on a regime of immunosuppressant medication. World Transplant Games participants demonstrate the level of health and vitality that can be achieved after transplantation.

Aspen Medical’s Managing Director Glenn Keys said "While we are well known for providing first world health in remote locations we have a well developed capability that can support events such as this. It is a honour to be involved with the courageous people who have endured a transplant and then compete at the highest standards, as seen here at the Transplant Games."

The World Transplant games is a unique sporting event with some interesting challenges in terms of supporting the athletes from a medical perspective with the recent HNN1 influenza virus a particular concern.

Aspen Medical's team worked closely with the transplant teams at both Princess Alexandra and Price Charles hospital in Brisbane, Queensland to establish processes and procedures in the event a participant required a higher level of medical care. The team were able to screen 2,125 participants within a 48 hour period. The team also treated just over 200 people for minor injuries with only 10 referrals to hospital for further assessment.
