Aspen secures 2010-11 contract extension for NT Indigenous health initiative
The Federal Department of Health and Ageing and Aspen Medical have signed an agreement to continue the operation of the Remote Area Health Corps (RAHC) for another 12 months (until 30 June, 2011).
RAHC was established to facilitate urban-based health professionals – GPs, nurses, allied health and dental – to undertake short-term, paid, placements in the remote health services of the Northern Territory.
Aspen Medical first won the contract to establish and operate RAHC in October 2008 and the first placement was made in December 2008.
Since that first placement, RAHC has supported 478 placements comprising 53 GP placements, 287 nurse placements, 47 allied health and 91 dental professionals. As of 30 June, these health professionals have delivered 1733 weeks of primary health care in remote communities throughout the NT.
Aspen Medical’s Managing Director, Glenn Keys, said “We have been delighted to have the opportunity to create and build RAHC and to now see it serving the health needs of remote Indigenous communities so effectively.”
“We are immensely proud of the achievements to date and thrilled to have the opportunity to continue and further build the organisation. The keen interest of so many urban-based health professionals to be part of ‘close the gap’ efforts and to take advantage of the opportunity that RAHC provides has been very encouraging.” said Keys
Aspen Medical, through RAHC will continue to work closely with communities and other stakeholders to ensure we respond effectively to their health workforce needs. We also aim to provide urban-based health professionals with a supported, rewarding experience and will further develop training programs and other mechanisms to ensure the experience is challenging, positive and rewarding for all.
